Laura Ruby’s “Diamond Head Series”
Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 12 to 1 p.m.
Hawai'i State Art Museum,
1st Floor, Multipurpose Room
Free Admission
Join us for our Art Lunch lecture entitled Recent Works from Laura Ruby’s “Diamond Head Series.” Laura Ruby will discuss her “Diamond Head Series,” a collection of artwork about land and power in Hawai'i focusing on the exploitation of land, resources, people, and their livelihoods. Her work chronicles the effects of colonialism, militarism, and rigid Hawaiian social/political structures, which have exerted control over land and people and the way nature itself is perceived. Ruby’s artwork dramatically illustrates how the natural world has been divided, broken up, and shattered, and how the remnants are often measured, packaged, and sold. The series currently has 55 prints, seven drawings, and five site-specific installation sculptures. Ruby is the recipient of an HSFCA Indivudial Artist Fellowship in Visual Arts in 2008. This lecture is part of the HSFCA Awards Recipient Series.
We invite you to join us for our next Art Lunch lecture entitled Hawai'i Making a Mark on the International Textile Scene: September 2008 Textile Society of America Biennial Symposium featuring Tom Klobe, former Director of the University of Hawai'i Art Gallery. The lectures are held on the last Tuesday of every month from 12 to 1 p.m. |
