us for Live from the Lawn at
HiSAM on First
Friday on
Sept. 7th. This special event features the
Hawai‘i Pacific University Cheer
and Dance Teams and the Hawai‘i
Jitterbugs in free performances.
Celebrate the back to school season with a pep rally
for the arts! The evening starts with an energy explosion
from the Hawai‘i Pacific University
Cheer and Dance Teams,
who perform from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Both teams are national
award winners, so you can expect a terrific show.
You can also dust off your dancing shoes and get
a free swing dance lesson as the Hawai‘i
Jitterbugs perform from 6:30 to 7 p.m.
Then there will be dance demonstrations and open
dancing for all to enjoy. Enjoy casual dining at Downtown
@ the HiSAM, the newest restaurant
in town, on the ground floor of the museum; or grab
a plate of gourmet grinds to go from their “ASAP
Express.” See
the great art from the State Art Collection on display
in the museum’s two art galleries. This free
event is presented by the Friends of the Hawai‘i
State Art Museum, the LEF Foundation, and the Department
of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. |

us for Second Saturday for
a fun family-oriented event entitled A
Play in Clay! Experience the wonderful
world of clay. It’s one of the oldest art materials
known to humans. Watch ceramic artists from the Hawai‘i
Potters' Guild demonstrate throwing clay on a potter's
wheel. Get hands-on and learn clay techniques – make
a tile with a carved design, use a press mold, create
tiny creatures, or fashion beads or a pendant. Cavemen
did it, so can you! Ohana fun for all ages. Parking
at Ali‘i Place is only $3 all day on Saturday.

American
Masterpieces Concert
Kahauanu Lake, Al Machida,
and the Dancers of Maiki Aiu Lake

American
Masterpieces is a national initiative
of the National Endowment for the Arts, coordinated
by project partner the Hawai‘i Arts Ensemble
in cooperation with the SFCA. There will be an American
Masterpieces concert
performance at Mamiya Theatre on Sept. 8th at 7 p.m.
The concert will feature musicians Kahauanu Lake and
Al Machida (of the Kahauanu Lake Trio) and the dancers
of Maiki Aiu Lake. Through a talk story format,
they will present and discuss the hula and music they
popularized during the statehood years (1950-1970).
In addition to this concert, there will also be upcoming
American Masterpieces statewide
concert and performance touring events, plus outreach
activities including halau workshop residences, lectures,
and audience discussion in spring 2008. To get tickets

This
month’s free Art Lunch lecture
is entitled The SFCA Award Recipient Series:
Eva Lee, Planting the Dance – Inside the Dance
to Tea. Dancer/choreographer Eva Lee
will share her insights on how culture and environment
shape artists’ social contributions within their
communities. As a modern dance artist, Lee has toured
China, Europe, Canada, and the USA.
Lee
has received numerous awards for her artistry in dance
including the SFCA's Individual Artist Fellowship Award
and the National Endowment for the Arts Choreographer's
Fellowship. Lee has worked in the arts on the Big Island
since 1981. Her home and studio are in Volcano Village,
where she cultivates tea as a grower and as an art
form. |

The
Big Read
A Performance of Amy Tan’s “The
Joy Luck Club”
Sunday, September 30, 2007, 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Richardson Theater, Fort Shafter, Honolulu
Free Event (More free events in October and November)
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment
for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center
of American culture. The NEA presents this special
programming in partnership with Arts Midwest and the
Institute of Museum and Library Services. Hawai‘i’s
The Big Read program is designed to inspire reading
of great literary works, such as The Joy Luck
Club,
while reaching out to citizens of all age groups.
The
Hawai‘i Capital Cultural District partners
will announce Hawai‘i’s program to the media
with a kick-off event with Governor Linda Lingle, Lt.
Governor James R. “Duke” Aiona, Jr. and Mrs.
Vivian Aiona at the Hawai‘i State Capitol on September
24th. There will be many events statewide in Hawai‘i
from September to November 2007. Activities will include
celebrity readings, theatrical interpretations, movie
screenings, cultural events, panel discussions, book
club gatherings, and hand-on workshops for teachers and
students across the state. For a list of these free local

The
first free event will be a staged reader theatre-style
performance of Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club at Richardson
Theater at Fort Shafter on Sept. 30th from 4 to 5:30
p.m. The story takes us on a journey from pre-World War
II China to modern-day United States through the words
and lives of four mothers and their very westernized
daughters. Join us as East meets West and cultures sometimes
collide in this heartwarming tale of love and the constant
need to adapt in order to keep that love alive. The 45-minute
performance will be followed by a question and answer
session led by University of Hawai‘i at Manoa professor,
Frank Stewart. |

to Social Studies & Language Arts through the Fine
Arts: Art of the Ancient World & Drama”

Workshop Fee: $60
Actor/musician
James McCarthy will show teachers how to bring cultural
anthropology and language arts to life with drama at
the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Participants will get
an in-depth look at art and artifacts in the Art
of the Ancient Mediterranean and Art
of Ancient China galleries
and will explore myth and cultural story through tableau. Registration

The
Hawai‘i State Art Museum is dedicated to presenting
the largest and finest collection of works by Hawai‘i
artists that celebrate the diverse artistic and cultural
legacy of Hawai‘i.
Enriched by Diversity: The Art of Hawai‘i,
is a semi-permanent exhibition featuring 132 works
of art by 105 Hawai‘i-based artists from the
Art in Public Places Collection. Inspirational themes
in the installation revolve around rediscovering Hawaiian
heritage, Asian roots, social consciousness, and cultural
traditions.
Precious
Resources: The Land & The Sea,
is a new temporary exhibition that explores our connection
to earth and water and the impact of our natural surroundings
on the identity, daily lives, and cultures of Hawai‘i.
Artists include Allyn Bromley, Robert Hamada, Kathleen
Kam, Herb Kane, Wayne Levin, Hiroki Morinoue, Louis
Pohl, Franco Salmoiraghi, and John Wisnosky. This
exhibition closes on Sept. 8th. |

@ the HiSAM, the new restaurant at the Hawai‘i
State Art Museum. Proprietor Ed Kenney, also the owner
of Town restaurant in Kaimuki, brings his “local
first, organic whenever possible, and with aloha always,” approach
to the downtown area. Located on the first floor of
the museum, the restaurant serves breakfast and lunch
with deli-style takeout, casual in-house dining, and
al fresco seating on the lanai by the swimming pool.
The restaurant may also be booked for private functions.
Plans for a full bar are in the works. In addition
to its regular hours, the restaurant is open on First
Fridays, from 5-9 p.m. For more information or to make
reservations, call 536-5900. Lunch reservations are
recommended for the popular new dining spot. |

special events and parties. The rental options include:
